It may actually be the case that what we eventually do is generate hydrogen using some zero-carbon energy source, and we may convert that hydrogen into a hydrocarbon and use it to drive our transportation fuels. However, we would take the carbon out of the atmosphere and simply release it back into the atmosphere in the process of combustion of that fuel.
