Dolly Varden is a form of Arctic char that is being considered as a species at risk, not because of commercial overfishing but simply because the communities have needed the fish and climatic events and geographic events — in one case a landslide that closed off the spawning area — have conspired to make it difficult for those communities to have a sufficient supply of Dolly Varden as they migrate past them, which they have done for centuries and seem to be failing to do now.

Another initiative we are taking for the Dolly Varden char is we are working on developing an integrated management plan for all the populations west of the Mackenzie River, and those are our attempts to precede the COSEWIC, Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada, process. They are considering listing Dolly Varden, and the Species At Risk Act has a responsibility to acknowledge any existing plans, so those are our efforts to have that in place ahead of time.

Nous travaillons également à une autre initiative en ce qui a trait à l'omble Dolly Varden, soit celle d'élaborer un plan de gestion intégrée, pour l'ensemble des populations à l'ouest du fleuve Mackenzie, afin de prendre de l'avance dans le processus du COSEPAC, le Comité sur la situation des espèces en péril au Canada, qui envisage d'inscrire la Dolly Varden à la liste des espèces en voie de disparition.
