On 22 July the European Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid, Louis Michel, will take part in the third Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Indian Ocean Commission in Antananarivo, Madagascar.

This Agreement constitutes a framework for strengthening international cooperation for the purpose of conserving and making rational use of Indian Ocean tuna and related species through the establishment of the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission, hereinafter called the "IOTC" and the adoption by the latter of resolutions on conservation and management in the area of competence of the IOTC which become binding on the contracting parties.

Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC): this Commission, of which the Community has been a member since 18 September 1995, provides a framework for strengthening international cooperation for the purpose of conserving and rationally utilising tuna and related species in the Indian Ocean and adjacent areas.
