As long as the fabricator can prove, following the allowed range in the standard, that they have this welding procedure — which is independently reviewed and then normally procedure tested, so it is a mock-up — and they demonstrate it will work and prove that the weld can be done, there is really not a hard and fast rule that thou shalt have a 45-degree bevel.
