There is still a risk of our vision being blinkered in this way, yet there is widespread conviction that the creation of our single currency is a clearly political act and that the Treaty on European Union signed in Maastricht in 1992 and the subsequent Treaty of Amsterdam in 1997 either initiated or consolidated a number of joint actions with a direct bearing on internal affairs, justice, external policy and defence, all of which areas extend well beyond the purely economic.
Le risque de limiter ainsi nos perspectives est toujours d'actualité; et pourtant, nous sommes largement convaincus que la création de notre monnaie unique est un fait éminemment politique, à partir duquel ont été lancées ou consolidées, dans le cadre du Traité sur l'Union européenne signé à Maastricht en 1992 puis du Traité d'Amsterdam de 1997, plusieurs actions communes concernant directement les affaires intérieures, la justice, la politique extérieure et la défense, autant de domaines qui débordent tous, à l'évidence, le cadre économique.
