What is more, freedom and a peaceful society are the raisons d'être of the European Union, and so we should fight extremely hard to maintain them. That means, on the one hand, that we will work very hard on security, and in that light, I should like to underline that I cannot comprehend the way in which the Member States, over the past few years, have cited national sovereignty as a justification for their unwillingness to step up cooperation.
Qui plus est, la liberté et une société pacifique sont les raisons d’être de l’Union européenne et c’est pourquoi nous devrions nous battre avec âpreté pour les maintenir, ce qui signifie notamment que nous plancherons sur la sécurité et, dans ce contexte, je tiens à souligner que je ne comprends pas la manière dont les États membres ont par le passé invoqué la souveraineté nationale pour justifier leur réticence à accélérer la coopération.
