In the early part of the century, a distinction was made between two main types of drug consumption: on the one hand, there were the Chinese on the west coast of Canada and their specific habit of smoking opium and, on the other hand, there was widespread use of patent medicines among the Canadian public and, according to the authors consulted (Murray 1988, Giffen et al. 1991, Mitchell 1990, Small, 1978, Solomon and Madison, 1976), the latter caused many more health problems than the use of opium by the Chinese.
Au début du siècle, on distinguait deux types prioritaires de consommation de drogues : d’un côté, on retrouvait les chinois de la côte ouest canadienne et leur habitude particulière qui consistait à fumer l’opium, alors que d’autre part, il existait un usage largement répandu de médicaments brevetés au sein de la population canadienne, ce qui suscitait, selon les auteurs consultés (Murray 1988, Giffen et coll. 1991, Mitchell 1990, Small, 1978, Solomon et Madison, 1976), des problèmes de santé qui pouvaient s’avérer bien plus importants que l’usage de l’opium chez les chinois.
