The methodological consistency of regional statistics shall be improved by the inclusion of more rigorous methodology in the relevant legislative framework when revised, by ensuring the production and quotation of separate statistics on men and women, and by the application of quality standards already commenced in regional accounts data which shall be extended to other regional statistics to assure comparability and timeliness.

Until very recently, the inadequacy of the indicators used to evaluate island economies has been masked by the fact that a large majority of them have been receiving maximum assistance as objective 1 regions. However the ongoing enlargement with its concomitant statistical effect have highlighted the need for more targeted statistical indicators to measure the needs of island regions.

The Commission says that regional statistics are ‘a cornerstone of the European Statistical System’ and has maintained and is continuing to use the existing classification established in the 1970s by Eurostat and based on a geographical division of territory, together with the current system for collecting data, whereby the national statistical bodies are responsible for providing regional data of interest to the EU, such as income or unemployment statistics and trends.
