TRADUCTIONS EN CONTEXTE
Radical breakthroughs with a transformative impact increasingly rely on intense collaboration across disciplines in science and technology (for instance, information and communication, biology, bioengineering and robotics, chemistry, physics, mathematics, medicine modelling, Earth system sciences, material sciences, neuro- and cognitive sciences, social sciences or economics) and with the arts, behavioural sciences and humanities.

Posts in the public sector in a Member State often call for a different type of diploma that attests to a certain level of education (university degree, school-leaving certificate plus three years’ higher education etc.) or a diploma attesting to a level of education that meets certain content-related criteria without the content in question constituting vocational training within the meaning of Directive 2005/36/EC (a requirement for a diploma in either economics, political science, science or social sciences, etc.).

The Commission will address in detail the historical, sociological and philosophical aspects of the development of relations between science and society, drawing on the human, economic and social sciences.

In economic action plan 2014 alone we announced the largest annual increase in funding for research through the granting councils in over a decade. This includes $46 million per year on an ongoing basis to be allotted as follows: $15 million per year to the Canadian Institutes of Health Research for the expansion of the strategy for patient-oriented research, the creation of the Canadian consortium on neurodegeneration in aging, and other health research priorities; $15 million per year to the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council to support advanced research in the natural sciences and engineering; $7 million per year for the Social Sciences and Huma ...[+++]

I come from a social science background, but I tend to favour that disparity, because—just playing the devil's advocate here—funding the social sciences, from a government point of view, especially with the government focus on the commercialization of knowledge and focus on innovation, funding the social sciences almost seems to corrupt the social science research.

Mr. Chad Gaffield (Chairman, Humanities and Social Sciences Federation of Canada): The Humanities and Social Sciences Federation of Canada represents 25,000 researchers in all the social and human science disciplines throughout Canada.

Discovery and innovation also have human, social and environmental dimensions, and the Committee was urged by the Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences to recognise that the social sciences are an integral component of each of the four areas of research identified in the strategy: environmental sciences and technology; natural resources and energy; health and related life sciences; and information and communication technologies.

The Humanities and Social Sciences Federation of Canada strongly recommends that the upcoming budget specifically address these issues, and that it treat as matters of priority the following three things: the budget of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council; the request of the universities for the funding of indirect costs; and the looming issue of recruitment and retention of new professors, particularly in the social sciences and humanities.
