As regards opening of the hunting season, the French legislation, there is often an overlap between hunting and the period of dependence of young birds - of sometimes more than 7 weeks. For example, in the Département of 'Loire Atlantique', the hunting season is opened for surface feeding ducks and for the Coot, Fulica atra, on the third Sunday of July, whereas the young birds of these species will not all have fledged (i.e. flown) until between 1 and 10 September.
Par exemple, dans le département de la Loire-Atlantique, la saison s'ouvre le troisième dimanche de juillet pour les canards de surface et les limicoles, alors que les jeunes oiseaux de ces espèces n'ont toutes leurs plumes (autrement dit, savent voler) qu'entre le 1er et le 10 septembre.
