On the initiative of Mrs Scrivener, Member of the Commission with responsibility for customs union and indirect taxation, and Mrs Papandreou, Member of the Commission with responsibility for employment, industrial relations and social affairs, and in close consultation with the workers concerned, the Commission of the European Communities has launched a study aimed at examining the redeployment in the twelve Member States of the above-mentioned occupations to intra-Community customs operations. The objectives of the study are: a) to evaluate the quantitative aspects of the problem (number of jobs lost, costs involved, etc. ...[+++]); b) to analyse the occupational profile of the persons concerned, with a view to assessing the type of operation involved and the cost of the redeployment; c) to put forward suitable proposals.
