Member State shall ensure that occupational health services perform medical surveillance of exposed workers, in accordance with Chapter VI, with regard to their exposure to ionising radiation and their fitness for the tasks assigned to them involving work with ionising radiation.

1. This Directive applies to any planned, existing or emergency exposure situation which involves a risk from exposure to ionising radiation which cannot be disregarded from a radiation protection point of view or with regard to the environment in view of long-term human health protection.

(1) Article 2(b) 191 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU) provides for the establishment of uniform safety standards to protect the health of workers and the general public and Article 30 of the Treaty defines ‘basic standards’ for the the legal basis for preserving, protecting and improving the quality of the environment and protecting human health protection of workers and the general public , including against the dangers arising from exposure to ionising radiations radiation . [Am. 2]

[Am. 2]

(8) Radiation source means an entity that may cause radiation exposure ‐ such as by emitting ionising radiation or by releasing radioactive material ‐ and can be treated as a single entity for protection and safety purposes;

As organisms are susceptible to both internal and external radiation, more resources should be devoted to examining in detail the impact that ionising radiation has on both humankind and the environment.

1. This Directive applies to any planned, existing, accidental or emergency exposure situation which involves a risk from exposure to ionising radiation which cannot be disregarded from the radiation protection point of view with regard to the health protection of workers, members of the public, or patients and other individuals subject to medical exposure or with regard to the protection of the environment.

H. whereas both EU legislation and the laws of the Member States already lay down rules on protection against health hazards that may arise from the use of technologies emitting ionising radiation and on limits for exposure to such radiation; whereas, therefore, scanners using ionising radiation should be prohibited in the European Union,

risks connected with ionising radiation from radioactive substances included in the device, in compliance with the protection requirements laid down in Council Directive 96/29/Euratom of 13 May 1996 laying down basic safety standards for the protection of the health of workers and the general public against the dangers arising from ionising radiation and Council Directive 97/43/Euratom of 30 June 1997 on health protection of individuals against the dangers of ionising radiation in relation to medical exposure
