First appointed to the bench in 1969 as a Justice of the Superior Court of Quebec, he was appointed to the Quebec Court of Appeal in 1978. He also served as vice-chair of the Canadian Law Reform Commission and later as its chair.
Nommé juge de la Cour supérieure du Québec en 1969, il a ensuite été nommé à la Cour d'appel du Québec en 1978 et vice-président, puis président, de la Commission de réforme du droit du Canada.
