The International River Improvements Act requires proponents that would like to construct improvements, such as dams, canals, obstructions, reservoirs or other works that would significantly alter the flow or level of any international river at the international boundary, to apply for a licence.
La Loi sur les ouvrages destinés à l’amélioration des cours d’eau internationaux rend obligatoire l'obtention d'un permis pour tout promoteur souhaitant aménager un ouvrage destiné à l'amélioration, tels un barrage, un canal, un obstacle, un bassin de retenue ou un autre ouvrage qui changerait considérablement le débit ou le niveau d'un cours d'eau international à la frontière internationale.
