Thanks to the bilateral agreement of 1991 on antitrust co-operation between the European Commission and the United States of America, the European Commission has been collaborating with the Federal Trade Commission, in particular to find a common and, hence, effective solution to the problems identified in the markets for cereal fungicides (world-wide divestiture of Novartis' strobilurin business) and maize herbicides (world-wide divestiture of AstraZeneca's acetochlor business).

The Regulatory Committee under Directive 90/220/EEC Directive on the deliberate release into the environment of genetically modified organisms, OJ L 117, 08.05.1990. has failed to deliver an opinion on two Commission proposals requesting Austria and Luxembourg to repeal their national bans on the use of the genetically modified Novartis Bt-maize (previously Ciba-Geigy) on their territory.
