Moreover, the ecu is the accounting unit used for the netting of reciprocal claims and liabilities of the various railway networks that arise from international transportation and is the means of payment in which resulting balances are settled. The ecu has thus facilitated a sharing of exchange risk between creditors and debtors which, previously, was carried wholly by those networks with a net debit position (payment was made in the currency of the creditor).
