It should be borne in mind that an important reason behind the negotiation of the association agreements with MERCOSUR and Chile was the wish to prevent the FTAA causing the same kind of loss of market share which has been observed in trade with Mexico since the entry into force of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
Dans ce sens, rappelons qu'une des principales motivations de la négociation d'accords d'association avec le Mercosur et le Chili résidait dans la nécessité d'éviter que la ZLEA entraîne elle aussi une diminution des parts de marché, comme on a pu l'observer au niveau du commerce avec le Mexique après l'entrée en vigueur de l'Accord de libre-échange nord-américain (Alena).
