Right Hon. Jean Chrétien (Prime Minister, Lib.): Mr. Speaker, some ten times or so I have read out here in the House the Liberal Party's commitment, made at the time of the election, namely that we were going to replace the GST by a form of taxation that would be harmonized with the provinces, that would generate the same level of revenue as the GST did in the past, that there would be a single administration to implement it, that there would be only one group of auditors bothering businessmen, etc.

Jean Chrétien (premier ministre, Lib.): Monsieur le Président, j'ai lu à peu près dix fois à la Chambre l'engagement qui a été pris par le Parti libéral, au moment de l'élection, où nous avons dit que nous allions remplacer la TPS par une forme de taxation qui serait harmonisée avec les provinces, qui générerait le même niveau de revenu que la TPS nous rapportait dans le passé, qu'il n'y aurait qu'une seule administration pour la mettre en place, qu'un seul groupe de vérificateurs pour déranger les hommes d'affaires, etc.
