M. whereas the growing interest in the Arctic region of non-Arctic actors such as China, Japan, India and other Asian nations, their allocation of funding to polar research, and, not least, the confirmation of observer status to the Arctic Council for South Korea, China, Japan, India and Singapore, all indicate the increasing geopolitical importance of the Arctic on a global scale;
