Obviously, in a perfect world, we could believe that the intellectuals motivated the government to change its stance somewhat, but I think that, in more practical terms, we can see that the combination of the issue of the prisoners in Guantánamo, President Bush's “axis of evil” declaration and the position of other world leaders has caused the Canadian government to step back somewhat from its initial position which was clearly and openly in support of the American position.
C'est sûr que, dans le meilleur des mondes, on pourrait penser que ce sont les intellectuels qui ont incité le gouvernement à changer son fusil d'épaule un peu, mais je pense que, de manière plus terre à terre, on voit que la question des prisonniers à Guantánamo, la déclaration du président Bush sur l'«axe du mal» et la position d'autres leaders dans le monde se sont conjuguées pour faire en sorte que le gouvernement canadien prenne un certain recul par rapport à une position initiale qui était franchement et ouvertement en faveur de la position américaine.
