This humble heritage, the protection and promotion of which is not only a cultural obligation but also a development need, has in many countries of Europe, at the responsibility of the governments, been altered considerably as a result of social and technological developments, unbridled economic exploitation and overdevelopment, which has, on the one hand, altered the place and destroyed – especially on the small scale of the islands – the wonderful balance between the natural and man-made environment and, on the other hand, destroyed highly-productive farmland.
Cet humble patrimoine, dont la protection et la promotion ne constituent pas seulement une obligation culturelle, mais également un besoin de développement, s’est vu dans de nombreux pays d’Europe, sous la responsabilité des gouvernements, altéré de manière considérable à cause des évolutions sociales et technologiques, d’une exploitation économique et d’un développement excessif débridés qui ont, d’une part, endommagé les sites et détruit - surtout à la petite échelle des îles - le merveilleux équilibre entre l’environnement naturel et celui créé par l’homme et, d’autre part, détruit des terres arables très productives.
