The risk of infection following exposure will vary, depending on the pathogen involved, with hepatitis C, for example, being much more infectious than HIV; the type of exposure, with a deep puncture wound posing a much greater risk than a splash of blood; the amount of blood involved, with the more blood, the more risk; and the amount of virus in the source patient's blood, with the more virus i.e., the sicker the source patient is the greater the risk.
