When I go to the World Crafts Council, where I represent the Canadian Crafts Federation, which it is now called, the countries there look to me and ask me about what is happening federally, and I feel rather ashamed—that's a strong word, but it is the fact—that I have to say my federal government, Canada, does not support the Canadian crafts people in the way they used to do, or in the way they should be doing.

It was agreed at this meeting to transform the Canadian Crafts Council into an organization that would primarily operate as a national electronic communications network for crafts, now called the Canadian Crafts Federation or la Fédération canadienne des métiers d'art. The organization operates again on a volunteer basis.

While craft councils can support a national organization to some extent, there's no way we can jointly support a national organization entirely, and I think it's necessary that the Department of Canadian Heritage reinstate funding to the Canadian Crafts Federation as a new organization that has the full support of all the provincial craft councils.

Les conseils des artisans peuvent appuyer financièrement un organisme national dans une certaine mesure, mais ils ne peuvent pas le faire entièrement. Voilà pourquoi je pense qu'il est nécessaire que le ministère du Patrimoine canadien rétablisse les fonds accordés à la Fédération canadienne des artisans à titre de nouvel organisme représentant les conseils provinciaux des artisans.
