The first version of the guidance, produced on 16th January 2002, considered those agents in the US Centre for Disease Control's (CDC) list of agents that might be used for the purposes of bioterrorism starting with Category A (smallpox (Variola major), anthrax (Bacillus anthracis), plague (Yersinia pestis), botulism (Clostridium botulinum toxin), tularemia (Francisella tularensis), viral haemorrhagic fevers (filoviruses e.g. Ebola, Marburg and arenaviruses e.g. Lassa, Machupo)).
