Currently, the RD involved concentrates particularly on the so-called 'paediatric multivalent' combinations of Diphtheria/Tetanus/Pertussis or DTP (a multivalent vaccine combining these three antigens has already existed for decades), polio, Haemophilus Influenzae B (Hib) -one of the causes of meningitis- and Hepatitis B (Hep B) antigens. However, not all the individual antigens are freely accessible to all producers.

However, after lengthy negotiations with the Commission services, the parties gave an undertaking to substantially amend their originally notified operation through: - granting distribution rights in relation to the French Measles/Mumps/Rubella vaccine markets to another party - granting manufacturing licenses in relation to the French, German and Scandinavian EFTA-countries' monovalent Hib markets to other parties - amending the cooperation agreements with Behringwerke AG, the German distributor of Merck's vaccines.

The creation of the JV will accelerate the availability of such multivalents as it has at its disposal a large range of monovalents for combination. This will lead to the achievement of important public health benefits, in particular for pediatric vaccination; young children will be able to benefit from the availability of a single set of injections, adapted to the requirements of each country, for immunisation against a whole range of diseases including diphteria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, hepatitis b and haemophilus influenzae b (Hib) (one of the causes of meningitis).
