Cet état peut être suivi d'un retrait croissant vis-à-vis de l'environnement (pouvant aller jusqu'à une stupeur dissociative - voir F44.2), ou d'une agitation avec hyper-activité (réaction de fuite ou fugue). Le trouble s'accompagne fréquemment des symptômes neuro-végétatifs d'une anxiété panique (tachycardie, transpiration, bouffées de chaleur). Les symptômes se manifestent habituellement dans les minutes suivant la survenue du stimulus ou de l'événement stressant et disparaissent en l'espace de deux à trois jours (souvent en quelques heures).
