Deep-sea container handling comprises "hinterland" traffic, where the port of loading or unloading is the first or the final port, and "transshipment" traffic, where the port is used as a hub for containers coming from or going to short sea spoke ports or as a "relay" for containers being unloaded from a deep-sea ship and than loaded on another deep-sea ship.
