We must remember that Quebec - or " Canada East" - joined Confederation in 1867 fearing encroachment by the U.S. It is ironic indeed that, 129 years later, many in Quebec now feel strong and secure enough to withstand the American monolith while claiming in the same breath that the development of the French language and culture has been constrained within Canada.
Il faut se rappeler que le Québec - ou «l'Est du Canada» - s'est joint à la Confédération en 1867 parce qu'il craignait l'influence des États-Unis. Il est plutôt ironique que, 129 ans plus tard, de nombreux Québécois se sentent assez forts et en sécurité pour résister au monolithe américain tout en prétendant du même souffle que la langue et de la culture françaises ne peuvent s'épanouir à l'intérieur du Canada.
