Such investment should not be to the detriment of other RD programmes but in line with the "3%" objective [15] and focus upon the most challenging aspects, in particular, knowledge-based industrial innovation ("nanomanufacturing"), integration at the macro-micro-nano interface and interdisciplinary ("converging") RD. Appropriate synergy with the European Strategy on Life Sciences and Biotechnology [16] may also be beneficial.
