(20) The progress made in the new technologies and in particular in their space applications, such as beacon-based ship monitoring systems, imaging systems or Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), now makes it possible to extend traffic monitoring further offshore and thereby to ensure better coverage of European waters, including by Long Range Identification and Tracking (LRIT) systems.
(20) Les progrès réalisés dans le domaine des nouvelles technologies et notamment de leurs applications spatiales, telles que les dispositifs de suivi des navires par balises, les systèmes d'imagerie ou encore le système global de navigation par satellite (GNSS), permettent aujourd'hui d'étendre la surveillance du trafic maritime plus loin au large et, ainsi, de mieux couvrir les eaux européennes, notamment grâce au système d'identification et de suivi à distance (LRIT, Long Range Identification and Tracking system).
