In the light of the traditional involvement of the fleets of some Member States in distant-water fishing, the overall scale of these fleets which together represent the world's fourth-ranking fishing power, their dependence on straddling stocks and highly migratory species, and the undertakings they have given internationally, the Community has a fundamental role to play within the RFOs.
Considérant l'activité séculaire de la flotte de certains Etats membres en matière de pêche lointaine, l'importance de l'ensemble de ces flottes qui, regroupées, représentent la quatrième puissance de pêche mondiale, la dépendance de ces dernières à l'égard des pêcheries d'espèces chevauchantes et hautement migratrices, et les engagements qu'elle a pris sur la scène internationale, la Communauté a un rôle fondamental à jouer au sein des ORP.
