Ever since Robert Schuman proposed the creation of a European Coal and Steel Community, Europe has had a long and difficult road to cover – and I believe it has done so successfully – in order for the present European Union of 27 Member States to come into being, a European Union that has now achieved a level of stability and prosperity that is the envy of the world, and that historic achievement would not have been possible without a far-sighted view of policymaking and a patient approach to strategy.
Depuis que Robert Schuman a proposé la création d’une Communauté européenne du charbon et de l’acier, l’Europe a dû parcourir un chemin long et difficile - et je crois qu’elle l’a fait avec succès - pour que l’actuelle Union européenne à 27 États membres voie le jour, une Union européenne qui a maintenant atteint un niveau de stabilité et de prospérité qui fait l’envie du monde entier. Or, cette réalisation historique n’aurait pas été possible sans une vision à long terme de la politique et une approche patiente de la stratégie.
