The modern food-processing industry was born: its full flowering was to come with the invention of a metal container, in the form of the familiar tin or can. The glass container was replaced by the tin, thus giving rise to a new industry - canning - which was given its mature form by Joseph Colind (England, 1823), who laid the foundations of the activity as we know it today.
