Calls on the Member States to heed the plea of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees for much stronger commitment to burden-sharing, allowing Syrian refugees to find protection beyond the immediate neighbouring region through resettlement, humanitarian admission schemes, simplified family reunification or more flexible visa regulations; calls on the Member States to expedite the processing of the asylum applications from the increasing number of Syrian refugees who are fleeing the zones of conflict; underlines the particular need to address those facing specific vulnerabilities, such as serious medical needs, sexuality, gender and ...[+++]disability; calls for the EU to address the tragic issue of the deadly journeys across the Mediterranean; calls on the Member States to ensure that at least 5 % of refugees from Syria are able to access protection outside the region in 2015, and that the most vulnerable refugees be prioritised and be guaranteed their full rights, in line with the 1951 Refugee Convention;

(b) must make a sponsorship application that includes a settlement plan, an undertaking and, if the sponsor has not entered into a sponsorship agreement with the Minister, a document issued by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees or a foreign state certifying the status of the foreign national as a refugee under the rules applicable to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees or the applicable laws of the foreign state, as the case may be; and

9. Calls on the EU to enhance its support to neighbouring countries providing assistance and protection to an increasing number of refugees and calls for an open border policy for those seeking protection; calls on the UN High Commissioner for Refugees to explore with the Israeli government the possibility to open Israel’s borders to refugees from Syria; urges at the same time EU Member Sates to fully examine Syrian applications for asylum and to resettle refugees from Syria so as to provide them with shelter options within the EU and in particular, the few refugees remaining in the Al Hol camp near the Turkish and Iraqi borders, that ...[+++]is comprised mainly of Palestinian refugees from Iraq who for years have been on the UNHCR’s lists for resettlement and who have been visited by a delegation of the European Parliament in 2010;

E. whereas 235 000 refugees from Syria have been registered or are awaiting registration by the UN High Commission for Refugees; whereas according to UN more than 1.2 million people have been internally displaced within Syria, and around 3 million are in need of urgent humanitarian assistance; whereas, despite all their difficulties, neighbouring countries of Syria have accepted everybody asking for protection so far according to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees; whereas, due to the rapidly growing number of Syrian refugees and displaced persons, pressure is increasing on these countries which need international support;
