The species destined for the canning industry are mainly tropical - yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares), skipjack (Katsuwonus pelamis) and big-eye tuna (Thunnus obsesus) - and the eastern Pacific region is one of the main sources for this type of fishery. The EC, through the fishing fleets of some of its Member States, has been fishing in the eastern Pacific for some years now.
