Given the European Union's and its Member States' history of involvement with the cotton sector in Africa, its long standing relationship with the continent under the successive Lomé Conventions and now the Cotonou Agreement and its role as a major international trading partner, the European Commission proposes that the Union enter into a partnership with Africa with the aim of supporting the development of the cotton sector in a comprehensive, structural and sustainable manner.
