In this riveting work, the presence of the Wîhtikow symbolizes the disappearance of the Cree (the only people the Wîhtikow devours). Through colonization and conversion to Christianity, the Cree have lost both their identity and their souls, as set out in the work’s inscription: “Progress, a new light on the land, ate our souls”.
