Mrs Loyola de Palacio, the candidate proposed by Mr Prodi for the part of commissioner responsible for transport, stated whilst on holiday in Galicia that the high-speed rail network would extend as far as Galicia, even though neither the Spanish Government nor RENFE (Spanish national rail company) has any such plans; indeed, Galicia is, besides the Canary and Balearic islands, the only one of Spain’s autonomous communities which, according to RENFE’s plans, is not to be served by high-speed train.
