These technologies are supporting progress in medical research, better management and diffusion of medical knowledge, and a shift towards evidence-based medicine. e-Health tools support the aggregation, analysis and storage of clinical data in all its forms; information tools provide access to the latest findings; while communication tools enable collaboration among many different organisations and health professionals.

- Long-term interdisciplinary research into understanding phenomena, mastering processes and developing research tools: The objectives are to expand the generic underlying knowledge base of application oriented nano-science and nanotechnology, and to develop leading edge research tools and techniques.

To this end, and in accordance with the objectives of the Commission Communication "Innovation in a knowledge-driven economy", activities will be implemented in a number of specific areas that are complementary and mutually supportive, within themselves and with the actions carried out under the heading "Integrating and strengthening the European Research Area". They will focus on improving the knowledge, understanding and capabilities of the actors involved - research workers, industrialists, investors, public authorities at European, national and regional levels, and others - by encouraging more intensive and fruitful interactions betw ...[+++]een them, and by providing strategic information and services, as well developing new methodologies and tools, to assist them in their particular endeavours. A general principle underlying all these actions is that innovation cannot be separated from research; the actions serve to reinforce the links between research and innovation, from the point of the conception of research activities, right through the period of their realisation.

As with Amendment 16, and in accordance with the EP's amendments to the Framework Programme itself, the JRC must contribute to developing practical tools for applying environmental research, and to the development of tools for local development.
