The options examined in the communication are: biofuels, natural gas and hydrogen. However, it also calls for the development of other fuels such as biogas, bioethanol, LPG and other leading-edge technologies, in particular the technology of hybrid cars (combining combustion and electric drives), which offers a degree of fuel saving comparable to that which could be provided by alternative fuels.
Les options qui ont donc été analysées dans la communication sont les suivantes: biocarburants, gaz naturel et hydrogène; cette communication prône néanmoins aussi le développement d’autres combustibles comme le biogaz, le bioéthanol le GPL et d’autres technologies de pointe, notamment celle des voitures hybrides (combinaison d'un moteur à combustion et d'un moteur électrique), qui permet une réduction de la consommation de produits pétroliers comparable à celle pouvant être obtenue avec des carburants de substitution.
