1990 brought about the first revision of the NACE classification, trying to take into account developments of the economy over all those years and to bring the European nomenclature close to the classification of industries elaborated by the United Nations and used worldwide and known as the CITI/ISIC (Classification internationale type, par industrie, de toutes les branches d'activité économique/ International Standard Industrial Classification of all economic activities).

This option exists in order to ensure that the NACE Rev. 2 Regulation also caters for the national specifics of a Member State’s economy. Obviously, in order to guarantee applicability and consistency of the national classification the Commission will have to verify conformity and authorise the national draft.

Welcomes the implementation by the Council, the European Parliament and the Ombudsman of the new nomenclature; urges all other institutions to adopt, for purposes of clarity and comparability, the same nomenclature; invites the other institutions to indicate whether they consider that any changes or adaptations should be made to the new nomenclature in order to take into account their specific administrative constraints;
