The aid, under a Community support framework for each region, is intended to: - offset some of the handicap of their considerable remoteness from the European continent (7 000 to 7 500 km); - contribute to integrating each region better into its regional geographical context by developing cooperation with its neighbours in the Caribbean or Latin America; - develop production in the agricultural, industrial and service sectors (in particular tourism); - strengthen the infrastructure supporting economic activities, in particular water resources, improvement of the environment and research and development; - step up vocational training ...[+++]efforts, including the necessary facilities.

Selection and evaluation criteria In order to be selected, the tourist destinations had to meet as many as possible of the following criteria: . drafting and implementation of a tourism development plan which respected the environment; . measures to ensure improved distribution of the flows of visitors over time and space; . innovative measures for the management of natural resources; . effective cooperation between the public and private operators concerned, and between the various administrative levels; . protection of natural sites; . restoration of run-down buildings and sites; . programmes for reducing nuisances, such as noise ...[+++], pollution, waste etc.; . specifications for architecture and decoration for integrating buildings and infrastructure into the environment; . tourism/environment training programme for persons working in the sector; . awareness campaigns on environmental protection for visitors and inhabitants; . scrupulous respect for national and European legislation on sustainable tourism and the environment.

The programme sets out three main lines of action: * diversification of tourist activities, in particular through better organization of mass tourism and the promotion of alternative types of tourism; * improvement of the quality of tourist services, particularly as regards information, awareness, accommodation and facilities; * action concerning the behaviour of tourists, in particular through awareness campaigns, the drawing up of codes of conduct and the choice of means of transport.
