Substantial competition from third countries (tuna from south-east Asia or sardines from Morocco) also led to a fall in the number of factories in France, Italy and Portugal. There was a similar trend in Spain, where, nonetheless, a comparatively high number of canning factories remain in production, thanks essentially to the large variety of products (as seen above).
